I extend my hand in friendship and bid you welcome. These clips document my personal history in the arts, the roadmap to where I am today. They are presented for your entertainment, and enjoyment. You will see my imperfections, and also witness my growth.
Everything you see was filmed when the opportunity presented. There were no rehearsals. Self defense presentations were improvised on the spot. Gun Fu as an art exists in the moment, and we tried to bring that point across.
Our videos may be embedded provided the associated warning and disclaimer text is included wherever our videos are placed. Otherwise ... verboten!
Martial arts, like any contact sport, presents the risk of injury, sometimes serious, disabling, or even fatal. Actual techniques should only be practiced in a controlled environment emphasizing safety, under the direct supervision of a Black Belt instructor (in whom you have trust and confidence), and only after you have been cleared by your personal physician.

MCC - 407 Studies of Internal Energy
Master Xie Bing Can (9/9/24 - 4/29/20) was born into a family of tuina (Chinese Massage) lay practitioners in China. Perhaps because of this, his study of tuina and qiqong began early and led to a life long interest in the internal arts, particularly Tai Chi Chuan. He studied intently. His passion and dedication ultimately led him to the world's foremost Tai Chi masters. Under their direct guidance and influence he too achieved mastery.
He never wavered in his commitment to sharing and encouraging his unique insights into the deepest foundations of those arts. This continued when at the age of 60 he immigrated to the United States, taking residence in Western Washington. There he continued to give and share what he knew, to whoever came and asked.
I did not have the good fortune of receiving Master Xie's direct tutelage. My good friend, Professor Sid Olufs did. Professor Sid and I have long pursued our own studies into Tai Chi Chuan, primarily under the guidance and influence of Master Lily Qin. Sid learned Master Xie was making himself available in Bellvue, Washington and immediately worked to become part of that group. His own skills improved dramatically in relatively short order. Master Xie was comfortable with Sid filming some of conceptual demonstrations and our group in Tacoma spent many hours (with Master Xie's blessing) analyzing what we found on the film clips. Assisting in the videos is Jeff Crossland, Master Xie's senior student.
Professor Sid has generously authorized our compilation of his clips into this video to serve the benefit of anyone interested. Each clip is presented at normal speed (the A clip) and 50% speed (the B clip). There are some artifacts on the clips which are on the originals. We have no control over that ... fortunately, they do not obscure the techniques.
I can say much more, but it is better you do the work on your own behalf. Much can be gleaned by careful scrutiny of what you see here.
As to Professor Sid's own experience, here are his words:
"Master Xie BingCan was the real deal. He was a student of masters Fu Zhongwen and Ma Yueliang, and among contemporaries was said to perform the long form most like Master Fu did. He was also a healer, since before he got into tai chi, and remained a member of the International Medical Qigong Society. He was very good at push hands and applications, although his emphasis was solely on defense. A colleague once asked him why he doesn’t attack during sparring sessions, and he said, no, I am only interested in deflecting attacks. (Told to me through an interpreter.). He came to the United States in the mid-1990s and continued to teach in Renton, WA. During his last years he was dedicated to passing along as much of the knowledge as he could, and allowed himself to be filmed, allowed students to put hands all over him to understand how he was moving, and patiently let students repeat the experience of pushing with him so as to better understand what he was teaching. Some of his students said he could be cranky, while I always found him to be of good cheer, and continuously encouraging his students to seriously pursue tai chi."

Overview This workout took place 28 years ago (4/9/89). What makes this very special, is that it features Master George Shin, one of my mentors, and by my reckoning, one of the finest Sensei and people I have ever met. Also featured is my martial arts brother in spirit, Master Don Wasielewski. Both of these gentlemen trace their histories back to the original Steve Armstrong Dojo in Tacoma, WA....

спасибо за ваше видео , за ваши уроки , практическое применение отличная скрытая и неожиданная техника с тростью ❤❤
You are most welcome.
These techniques only work on the weak. this only works for adepts.
very good.... thanks a lot. i am from Brasil
Thanks and welcome
Keep in mind that Master Shimabuku was not a young man when he demonstrated these katas. This is not the whole kata and not as he taught it to my Sensei.
I grew up watching this man, and trained in Isshinryu long before I went into the airborne infantry. I made it my mission to target bullies with the skills I carried with me throughout my life.
If u see d development of jkd it will b an eye opening practically nd if u see it philosophically its a realization ...of truth ..its beyond d dead patterns ...plz read J krishnamurti if u find time which master Lee had put in his book Tao of jkd
Impressive maneuvers very good techniques and abilities I still wish I should hit stating karate so I could be looking things and doing these type of things it helps make the body stronger and I know it could have kept on going with it it could have helped me come something stronger still wish I should have stayed in karate and be a long good people 🥋☯️🙏😌🙏☯️🥋
Awesome
You mention many more videos in the description, do have the other videos of him uploaded somewhere else? This is an archive the world should see I'd imagine! He was Incredible.
They are with his family. Mostly recorded on extended play vhs and of low viewing quality. Master Archibeque often had a camera running during his classes. Plowing through them to find the few good clips has proven too daunting a task for anyone to undertake. We do have our memories though.
Very good sir, reminds me of Grandmaster seeing your interpretation and sharing of the 🐉 a piece of his living art lives on.
Thank you so much 😀
Awesome
My thanks to you.

Shimabuku was a great master...the problem with isshin ryu karate 🥋 it didn't take a good place at the modern media, + the ashihara karate and new stuff gone viral i don't know how but it happened Σ(ಠ_ಠ)

What martial art is this?
I acquired skills in short stick during my years in Hapkido.
@@Spreadswings WHAT BELT LEVEL USUALLY SHORT STICKS ARE TAUGHT?
It varies from school to school. Often it is reserved for advanced students, often post Black Belt.
is this xie bingcan teaching?
Master Xie passed unexpectedly on 4/29/20 --- age 85.
@@Spreadswings thank you, just curious if what was taught in the video was Xie's teaching or your cumulative understanding
I studied Isshin Ryu at the ‘Sai Dojo’ under Sensai R Buss and Sensai R Hoffman (circa 1972-1975). This was on the Eastside of Cleveland, Ohio. Master Tatuo Shimabuka’s wishes were observed 100% , at that time. This video indicates that some changes to Katas were modified after his death, under his son’s inheritance. Not drastic, but notable. Of four different systems I have encountered, Isshin Ryu is at the top. Starting in 1967, I was introduced to Chuck Norris’s Moo Duk Kwan-style Tang Soo Do in Chula Vista, California. So, going from that to Isshin Ryu was a ‘whole new ballgame’ for me but, well worth it. I am so glad I found ‘Sai Dojo’. It’s great to see videos like this!!!
If you find this, I hope you have an amazing day. If you are like me and tried to print an Airsoft Glock by Archie 73 and searched on here
It was meant to be.

That George Shin was the only one in the video that had actual technical knowledge. The others were just somehow moving their arms and feet and were most certainly proud of being able to call themselves "7th Dan".
Jeez ... you have a lot of garbage floating around in your head. Read what you said, then ponder this. George Shin never spoke like that about anybody.
@@Spreadswings I have just had 20 years of time in which I could watch hundreds of karatekas in different clubs and I was being taught by three different teachers, a few years I did parallely German Ju Jutsu - which was followed up after a few years by traditional Jiu Jitsu - beside karate.
Interesting
Wow nice sir
Thanks
Nice sir
🙏
I am student of Robert Edwards Jr. It is great to see this video of his sensei, Mr. Armstrong.
Yep. Robert is a highly respected friend of mine. A great martial artist.
Wow that was amazing! Learnt a lot in 10 minutes and just have to practice some of those for self defence. Being grabbed is so common in street fights.
can't believe it's been all these years now--RIP Master Earl Squalls
All the comments criticizing your technique like you're a 20-year-old studying at Shaolin Temple crack me up. It's like the commentors expect you to actually have to defend yourself with a naginata one day soon lol. All I'll say is that I just hope that in a couple very short decades when I'm your age I'm still doing things I enjoy because I enjoy them, and actually using my body for things more active than channel surfing. I hope you don't take my comment the wrong way. I'm saying that I respect what you're doing. It's cool as hell.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I haven’t heard his voice in 14 years and never got to see him in action, doing what he loved. This is family history I’ve always wanted to know more about & reading all the things people have to say about him makes my heart happy. ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it
Cool AF. That's the way to think. You can instantly have effective weapons in both hands thinking like that.
The only thing being it's not "kubotan".
Archie passed away this January. We're just glad we have this to remember him.
@@Spreadswingswhat IT was The full name of Archie?
Isidro Archibeque.
I watched for 3 minutes and didn't see anything that would be effective or of any value in self defense. I think self defense should be taken serious so I comment with honesty.
It's what it is Patrick. Take it or leave it. If you can come up with something better, or what you would describe as effective or having value in self defense, you should post it.
@@Spreadswings I watched the entire video after your reply. There is certainly nothing in your video that could be applied to successful self defense. I did notice that you never say this could be used against a real attacker. However those not familiar with what works and what doesn't could easily think these techniques have some real life application.
Bad cameraman...
They're filmed on the fly, one take, completely improvised, with whoever is there to hold the camera. We have zero budget, zero support, and do this only to preserve skills and concepts which might otherwise be forever lost.
Whenever you upload something, I find something new to learn.....Thank You Sir for sharing..... greetings from India
Thank you for your kind words my friend. Stay safe and healthy.

I'm generally familiar with Silat (Sifu Jim Ingram). There are indeed similarities.
I do enjoy your posts please stay safe and well from Australia
Thank you. You stay safe too.
Thank you sir, for sharing your knowledge, its much appreciated, Manchester, U.K..
You're very welcome, my friend.
Where did you get a cane with such a wide crook?
They're getting harder to find. You can take any rattan cane, and using steam, reshape the crook. Or, you can scan Ebay for "combat hapkido cane." You'll find a number of variants there.
8:34 OUCH!! PAINED BALLS!!
I think you're the only person who noticed that.
any thoughts thank you on this link it seems to be a new French version of the tonfa ua-cam.com/video/ElN3diaDoD0/v-deo.html
this is the only video which shows us how to really use a handkerchief as a defense
Thanks for that. There's much more to it than most are aware of.
Thank You so much for your teaching. Videos. Self defense for a Senior citizen can be very real and effective. Thank You again
You're very welcome.
Many thanks for all your great videos down the years Mr McCabe. Excellent techniques performed and communicated so simply.
Thank you Patrick.
Thank you so much for this video of a long ago time. I had thought records of those days to be lost! I remember the mural on the wall of Armstrong sensei's dojo. That would be the spring of 1964. Armstrong sensei was friends with an ex navy man, Gordon Craig who taught at his home just south of SeaTac. I met Gordy, in in 1969 or the spring of 1970s.
Thanks for your input. Mr Armstrong's influence and outreach was extraordinary, as your comment affirms.
Que porra é essa? karatê, Muay thai, Kung fu....?
It's explained in the accompanying text. He calls his style Gun Fu (Animal Fighting Styles).
You are holding the came backwards - the crook faces forward for numerous reasons. 2:15 You are doing the first one wrong - you step your right foot on top of their right foot and trap it - keep the cane horizontal and up as high as you can. 3:20 I turn toward you and with my left foot I kick you in the groin 5:24 is where I punch you in the balls with my left hand. 6:40 why would someone keep hanging on? 9:20 nobody hangs on like that unless they are totally drunk - they would be pounding you with punches. All that ducking under the arm business is nonsense. I wish I could give you lessons - you are only 1/2 way there.
I appreciate the courtesy of your comment and believe you mean well. The points you raise are addressed in many of the other videos. This particular video is a casual overview of possibilities to explore. The setting is informal. This is not a real fight. These are not real attacks. Safety and demonstration are the objective. It doesn't seem like its registering that way with you. That's okay. You do understand, when the situation changes, my responses change to suit the moment. Not a big deal. I like the idea of what you're saying and suggest you dedicate some time to recording what you describe and sharing it with others on UA-cam. Everyone is trying to improve. We're always half way there.
Wow thanks he punched me in chest and said kata tell story.
Interesting thought. Translation please?
Kata tell story. Exactly that we learn the lesson from kata if we practice.
Yep!
All of these videos are crap, when you are being attacked in RL the attacker is not going to come at you slowly giving you time to workout / remember what move to do, Adrenalin will be pumping in both of you, everything will happen so fast you wont even have time to remember these dumb dance moves, your best bet is to hit your attacker with the cane as hard as you can on a lower leg or forearm or hand.
You're mistaking courtesy, control, restraint and safety of others for an imaginary fight that's playing out in your head. You should make a video of it ... it would be fun to watch. This is something entirely different, an impromptu demonstration.
Unlike many videos on shihonage or four corners you also take the time to illustrate the footwork required to make it work, Mr McCabe. Many thanks for passing on your knowledge and experience.
Most folks don't pick up on that. Thanks for re-enforcing it Patrick.
Mr McCabe, your skill is only matched by your humility and many years of experience. Thanks for all your uploads and words of wisdom, and best wishes to you from Ireland (where we still have many the McCabe). Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat.
Thank you for your kind words Patrick. It's always great to hear from the Emerald Isle. And best of luck to you too, my friend!
